The world is full of words! Your challenge is to read as many of them as you can, as often as you can before the summer is out!
🏕️ How it works
Sign up the next time you visit the library and take away your Summer Reading Challenge activitiy sheet! You can also register online and download a copy to print at home.
Each day of summer we challenge you to read something you enjoy for as long as you can OR complete one of our reading activities (feel free to adapt activities to suit your or your child’s abilities/resources).
Once you have done this, colour in one of the bubbles on the front. You can only colour in one bubble each day.
Sign up the next time you visit the library and take away a booklet, or you can also register online and download a copy to print at home.
Read books and/or complete activities between Wednesday 1 December, 2021 and Monday 31 January, 2022.
Each book you read will give you an entry into the prize draw. Once you have read a book, log the title, author, and how many stars you would rate it in your booklet, or online below.
🛍️ The prizes
Everyone who enters the challenge and completes at least 10 bubbles gets a FREE BOOK and an entry into the grand prize draw!
For every extra 10 bubbles you do, you’ll get another entry so keep reading!
Every participant who reads at least one book or completes one activitiy will receive a free book.

🤔 Why Summer Reading?
The Summer Reading Challenge is designed to keep kids reading and prevent the “summer slide”, where reading skills drop off over the long summer holidays. Weeks, if not a term or more, are spent helping students catch up to their reading levels from the previous year.
In one New Zealand study, some students in a South Auckland decile 1 school lost 5.8 months reading progress over the summer holidays. This year the summer reading challenge is open for all ages, adults included!
