Discover the heart-wrenching multigenerational family memoir by an excommunicated member of the Exclusive Brethren.

  • 📅 When: Friday 2nd February at 5:30 pm
  • 📍 Where: Invercargill Library

🌟 About the book:
After coming out as gay, Craig Hoyle was excommunicated from the New Zealand Exclusive Brethren and forced to say goodbye to his family forever. This conservative sect defined his entire childhood, where rules prohibited television, pop music, sports, and even pets.

Joining public society, the ‘worldlies’, for the first time, Craig seeks to connect with his grandfather, who was excommunicated in the 1980s. Through his grandfather’s diaries and letters, Craig unveils a complex familial history spanning two centuries and seven generations, marked by a tangled and often cruel relationship with the Brethren.
“Excommunicated” intricately weaves together this familial past with Craig’s own upbringing in the secretive and oppressive religious group. The book charts the evolution of the Exclusive Brethren in New Zealand and shares the heart-wrenching story of a family torn apart.
🎙️ Join the Author:
Experience the narrative firsthand as Craig Hoyle shares the inspiration behind his work, discusses the challenges faced, and emphasizes the significance of bringing these untold stories to light.
