  • Stepping Up Computer Classes

    Try our new computer classes for adults! Stepping Up is an initiative of the 20/20 communications trust, a not-for-profit community trust. Each class module, called a ‘digital step’, takes two hours to complete. We offer two courses per week and repeat the courses on a monthly rotation. All classes are in the Library Training Room and registrations are required.

    • Introduction to Social Media

      Week 1. Monday 1:00 - 3:00pm

       

      You will learn what social networking is and how you can participate in some popular social media sites including:

       

      •  Facebook

      •  Twitter

      •  LinkedIn

      •  Google +

    • Facebook

      Week 1. Wednesday 10:30 - 12:30

       

      You will learn how to create a Facebook account and use it to engage with your friends:

       

      • Create an account

      • Posting to your wall

      • Accepting and sending friend requests

      •  Sending private messages

      • Privacy settings

    • Computer Basics

      Week 2. Monday 1:00pm - 3:00pm


      This class is designed for first-time computer users. You will learn how to use the core functions of a computer and file management. Course includes:


      •  Parts of a computer
      •  The desktop, log-on and passwords
      •  Using a mouse and keyboard
      •  Files and folders
       Basic troubleshooting

      Week 2. Wednesday 10:30 - 12:30


      This class is intended for people who don't already have an email account. If you have a cell phone please bring this to the class in order to receive a text verification code to set up your email account.

    • Real Me

      Week 3. Monday 1:00pm - 3:00pm

       

      You will learn how to create an online account recognised by Government agencies:

       

      • What is RealMe?

      • A Verified or Unverified account?

      • Creating a RealMe account & verifying it

      • RealMe for proving your identity

      • Organisations currently using RealMe

      • Keeping your details safe, secure and private

    • WINZ - My Account

      Week 3. Wednesday 10:30 - 12:30

       

      You will learn to how create an online Work and Income account that will allow you to:

       

      • Check your next appointment & payments

      • Book, change and cancel appointments

      • Update contact and bank account info

      • Update address and accommodation costs

      • Tell Work & Income about your job search

      • Stop your payments

      • View your debt balance and repayments

      • Complete a self-assessment

    • Digital Photos

      Week 4. Monday 1:00pm - 3:00pm

       

      You will learn how to download and share photos from your camera and/or Smartphone:

       

      • Transferring photos from your digital camera to a computer

      • Sharing your camera’s digital photos with family and friends

      • Transferring photos from your Smartphone to a computer

      • Sharing your photos directly from your Smartphone

    • Ancestry

      Week 4. Wednesday 10:30 - 12:30

      You will learn tips for effective searching on Ancestry.com, including records that are available in the UK and New Zealand:

       

      • Search tips for using Ancestry

      •  Record collections for New Zealand

      • Record collections for the UK

      •  Viewing Public Member Trees

      •  How to send records home from the library
