An amazing week of free Christmas events for all ages

Christmas is a busy time of year. It can be hard to keep the kids entertained while harnessing their excitement. Or maybe you need a break from the Christmas hustle and bustle? Visit us each day during the week leading up to Christmas for a range of fun free events for kids and parents at the Library.

Please note that children under 14 must be supervised by an adult at our Christmas events.

The Chatter Christmas Party

Monday 17 December 10:00am – 12:00pm
The Chatter Christmas Party will celebrate 2018 in good old fashion Chatter style. Come
join all the regular Chatterers in a very merry Christmas pot luck event, there will be carols,
food, laughter and you will also meet someone new. This is a great way to kick off the
holiday season, let your hair down and reflect on another fantastic year. Meri Kirihimete

Christmas Storytime and Decoration Making

Every morning from 11:00am we will have a Christmas story and craft to complete.

This will be a magical event for kids who love Christmas time! There will be Christmas stories and Christmas decoration making. Kids can even take what they make home, with no cost or mess at home for you! Each day we will be making a different decoration so you can attend as many sessions as you desire!

Christmas Break Boredom Busters

Every afternoon between 2:00 – 4:00pm we will have a fun, free activity for kids. No registrations are required, just come along and join in on the fun.

Colouring Competition

Kids

A competition for all ages. We have four Christmas scenes for you to colour – get them back
before Friday 21 of December, and you could win a Christmas themed book! Entries are available from the Library.

Christmas Carols in the Foyer

Thursday 20 December
Come along for a few hours of free performances from a selection of local musicians. At
12:30pm The Lyrical Librarians will perform a selection of Christmas carols and songs, to
finish off the event with a bang. Come along and join in, or sit back, relax and soak up the
festive atmosphere.

The Great Escape Launch Party! A fun, free event for kids!

The Great Escape is our summer reading challenge, for all ages! This year, we will be hosting a fun, free launch event for kids! 

We will have face painting, a photo booth, and lucky dip prizes for kids present on the day! The Santa Parade starts at 2:00pm so come in early and have some fun at the Library before securing a great spot to watch the parade out front!

Meet the Oral Historians

When: Tuesday 20 November, 3:00pm
Where: Invercargill Public Library

Come along and meet those behind the Southland Oral History Project. The project aims to capture Southland stories as a collective memory of what it is to be part of this community. 

The Project is actively supported by Heritage South and the Invercargill City Libraries and Archives and run with the help of amazing local volunteers. Come along and talk to our interviewers about what they do and how you can get involved and support the project.

Refurbishment Update: Stage 3 nearing completion

Stage 3 of our ongoing refurbishment project is nearing its completion. Stage 4, the final phase, is scheduled to begin 2 November 2018.

You will notice our new Help Desk right in the middle of the ground floor when you come into the Library, whether from the Dee Street or car park entrance. This is the first point of call for all of your enquiries. We will be pleased to show you around and point you in the right direction, please ask.

Upcoming Changes

  • All Children's material is being moved back to the renovated Children's Services.
  • Music, DVD, Blu-ray, Videogames, Puzzles, and Board Game collections are all being moved to Children's Services near the Activity Spaces
  • A new Parent’s Room is available with diaper changing and toilet facilities, accessible on the ground floor.
  • Newspapers are being moved downstairs to the ground floor.
  • Biographies are being moved downstairs to the ground floor.
  • APNK Internet Computers will be moved downstairs to the ground floor.
